What is R&D Tax Relief?
R&D Tax Relief is a UK government incentive that rewards businesses for investing in innovation. If your company has developed new products, processes, software, or services or significantly improved existing ones you may be able to claim tax relief or a cash payment for qualifying R&D expenditure.
Does my business qualify for an R&D Tax Relief claim?
Many businesses qualify without realising it. You may be eligible if your company has attempted to overcome scientific or technological uncertainties while developing or improving products, processes, software, or systems. Businesses across sectors such as manufacturing, engineering, software, construction, healthcare, and food production can all qualify.
What costs can be included in an R&D Tax Relief claim?
Qualifying costs typically include:
- Staff salaries and employer National Insurance contributions.
- Subcontractor and externally provided worker costs (subject to HMRC rules).
- Software licences used in R&D.
- Consumable materials and utilities.
- Cloud computing and data licence costs (where applicable).
- Certain prototype and testing costs.
How much could my business claim?
The amount depends on your company’s size, profitability, qualifying expenditure, and the applicable R&D tax relief scheme.
We are members of The R&D Community who support us with training and guidance.
